Global port congestion is becoming increasingly apparent, with severe congestion in ports such as Singapore, Durban, Dammam, Chittagong, Colombo, and Jebel Ali. The anchorage time in Singapore lasted up to 84 hours, while in Durban it lasted up to 79 hours.
Adverse weather conditions, geological disasters, political factors, ship malfunctions, labor shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and global supply chain tensions. These factors are intertwined and together contribute to the current global port congestion situation.
The peak season effect has arrived earlier, and it is expected that congestion will further intensify during the peak season. In response to congestion, some shipping companies have chosen to skip ports and stop docking, forcing freight rates to rise.
The container congestion at Singapore Port has reached an unprecedented level of crisis. At present, a large number of ships are queuing outside the port to berth, with a backlog of containers exceeding an astonishing 450000 TEUs. According to the analysis company's estimate, the queue waiting time for these ships can reach up to seven days.
This serious congestion situation has forced some shipping companies to cancel their originally scheduled stops at Singapore ports, which undoubtedly exacerbates the pressure on ships to directly reach the ports. These ships will have to face the challenge of handling additional container volumes, further exacerbating the tension in the supply chain.
Affected by the Red Sea crisis, the peak season of the third quarter has arrived earlier, and it is expected that the peak season effect will continue. At present, there is not only a shortage of ships in the market, but also a shortage of containers.
In addition, due to the diversion of ships, there has been a significant increase in demand for ports in the Western Mediterranean and other regions, leading to intensified port congestion, including some major ports in Asia, which will also affect the efficiency of ship usage. With the arrival of peak season, congestion at these terminals may further intensify, further exacerbating the supply and demand tension of ships and containers.
